Metabolic Approach to Schizophrenia?

Hey peeps,

Don't get through here much and burned out some other avenues but found the lo carb/keto thing to be so beneficial for schizophrenia. Shrink got me on it but after a year and a half doing it pretty poorly the results have been profound.

Like get all your gp stuff sorted but after 6 months of keto principles I had some great improvements in mental health especially with negative symptoms. It's improved from there and it's worthwhile investigating.

Adding gut biome stuff also really helped me with getting off of alcohol and it's all nuts.....This stuff works for me and it's really something I wish I'd known way earlier. Diagnosed 1999. On lowest doses of my primary psych meds and doing things a year ago I wasn't. It's nuts.....

I'm interested in anyone who has gone down the rabbit hole to similar results....My shrink has another punter who has done the same and doing gangbusters like me........

Re: Metabolic Approach to Schizophrenia?

Not quite the same in that my parents generation had the schizophrenia diagnoses and my son and I are presenting more bipolar... ish. He did keto a lot for a few years. Now we are more lo carb, high protein and nutrition and yes to gut health and all that.

Glad you are getting some relief and have a pdoc who cares. @rogueone

Re: Metabolic Approach to Schizophrenia?

Yeah it's horses for courses for sure with most mental health but it's been an amazing journey. Treading water for 20 years and now some significant gains with function. The crazy thing is that for me it works and it's hard to share because I think it gets too hard for most people which does my head in....

Take your medications as prescribed and look for best function has always been the modern mantra but I'm interested for those who've tried keto specifically because it works great for losing weight { caveat.....exercise helps so much in my personal opinion } and that is a gain for most people on antipsychotics.

It boggles my mind as someone coming out the other end of the process because there really is something worthwhile to the approach. It's just a diet. Yes it's hard but so is any eating plan but the gains after 6 months or so are something for myself personally.

Re: Metabolic Approach to Schizophrenia?

Yes I am definitely experiencing improvement in many areas

weight loss

motivation

better mood

less symptoms delusions etc

lowered medication

Not not so much with my symptoms  when I am stressed though.

i worry though if this works for people on disability pension will the government kick them off, some people have probably not been working in years

Re: Metabolic Approach to Schizophrenia?

Hi @rogueone i had psychosis in 2003  for 15 years been down the rabbit hole more than most last 5 years been on medication would love to hear your story especially if it was in last 5 years

Re: Metabolic Approach to Schizophrenia?

Yeah stress is the great leveller. Keep on keeping on and it's worthwhile persuing. My shrink is very good and I'm on disability. He supports me as I'm basically a carer now with my father. I cannot return to work because I've no skills or had a career being on the pension for over 20 years. If your young though it's a no brainer.....as to disability it's nuts that people with sz and complex mental health issues aren't getting on the pension out here anymore. Enough said about that.

Re: Metabolic Approach to Schizophrenia?

I was dxed 1999. Do well on meds and been on same meds for 20 years.

Got on keto with doc suggestion 2 years ago. First 6 months lost a lot of weight as on a n0torious weight gainer but mentally it works for me. After 6 months got really good improvements in positives so came down to lowest clinical doses of my antipsyh and my antidepressant.

So yes I'm older but I wish I knew about this back in 1999 when diagnosed. Paranoid sz with anxiety and major depression.

It's dumb but it works well for me. Better yet exploring gut biome stuff on my psydocs suggestions and going gangbusters......radically cut down on alcohol and improving every week by doing things I wasn't doing 6 months ago even....

I'd recommend you talk to gp and get all your baseline health done so you can do it the healthy way and talk to your shrink. It's been a game changer for me after 20 years or treading water.....I'm now thriving.
