Re: Self care by growing a garden

'S'funny... I've got a fairly substantial amount of space available. We're on a 1/3 acre town block, and buildings take up maybe 1/3 of that, the rest I consider fair game. But finding time to prepare planting areas is another question, so this year I'm trying growing a lot of things in pots that I'd usually put in the ground. I've just come in from planting another one with a Stevia cutting, a red leaved Heuchera, some Corsican Mint (tiny leaves and intense peppermint scent and flavour), and a native celery that doesn't look really healthy. I'm hoping it'll pick up with a bit of space to put its roots out.

I've got other pots with the big Stevia plant that the cutting came from, basil, angelica, lovage, strawberries, pineapple sage, celery and more... most seem to be doing well.

Tomato looks great @Former-Member, nice that you have got things growing in pots @Smc.

Things in the garden are still at a relative standstill here with only an odd bit of effort bit there might be done self down spuds soon. Mr D was wondering if we had lost another hen but I found her alive and well probably sitting on eggs so perhaps more chicks to come. The other 9 have all survived their first three weeks.

Hello @Former-Member @Smc @Former-Member @Faith-and-Hope @Former-Member

@eudemonism  is enthusiastic about creating a special place to sit...grow herbs...grow vegetables..plant  trees ...a nice relaxing place for him to chill out...

I suggested he sketch a rough idea of where he would like different areas taking into account sun..shade.

also preparation re soil...fertiliser etc etc..

then ...ding...I thought of this thread..

I suggested have a look....can be observer no need to talk ...or can respond when wants..

so would be lovely if you could all invite him and me too please

thanking you all in advance ..

Hi @Former-Member @Former-Member @Smc @Former-Member @eudemonism ..... you will recognise some of this as “not growing things” .... but I am spas much into garden ornamentation as I am 8nto plants and flowerbeds themselves .....

Hope you like it too.

Re: Self care by growing a garden

@Faith-and-Hope looks good. I'd possibly do something like that for Christmas or some other special occasion. Generally though my garden ornamentation leans towards old tools or ceramic sculpture. I've got a Tahitian Lady head and shoulders sculpture that I made as part of my Ceramics Diploma keeping an eye on the peach tree, and an old frozen up rotary push mower resting against the back of my kiln shed. I'd like to have more "functional ornamentation" around in the form of walls, seating, a spot for a hammock. Hassle is, we get a lot of mozzies because we're near a creek, so any seating areas need netting. Enclosed gazebo might work, but that would require a lot of structural work. I'm not the sort to walk into a garden centre and hand over $$$ for a ready made one. Smiley Tongue

This is a little garden inspired arrangement I've got sitting by the back door. Most of the "antiques" were garden finds too. Our house was built in the late 1800s, and garbage collections weren't introduced until the late 1900s, so that's a lot of time for chipped, cracked and broken household goods to accumulate.

Re: Self care by growing a garden

The hose we moved into six moths ago has a courtyard that is almost completely paved apart from one small bed with a nectarine tree. Some of the branches of the nectarine are quite sturdy so I have hung some pots in baskets. The opposite wall is full with large and small pots with plants and herbs. Many of my plants are grown from cuttings so cost nothing. A bid bath I keep full has a maiden hair standing in it that is grown from a plant of my grandmothers.
There are a few crispy edges from the hot weather but I water most evenings as pots dry out quickly. 🌱🍀☘️🌿🍃💐

Re: Self care by growing a garden

I have been wanting to make a vegie garden for a while, something our boys would love to do with me also. Problem we live on rock where only weeds grow so has been in the too hard basket. Well last week I was given an old galvanized water tank. This will make a fantastic garden bed. Mum and Dad in-law have a couple using an old tank and it worked out great.

It is an easy way to have a raised bed fill it with good soil and compist and be able to mow around easily. Just have to find the energy to go and fetch it then cut it down and find somewhere to put it 😊

My darling is concerned it will be another unfinished project sutting in our yard, aiming to prove her wrong.

Re: Self care by growing a garden

@Determined I know I've got too many unfinished projects, both in and outside. It's easy to lose motivation when you're emotionally exhausted, but feels so good when finally something comes together. All the best with the tank garden. Smiley Happy

Great idea @Determined and the kids will enjoy being involved in the planting , watering and harvesting of your own veggies 👍🏻

Re: Self care by growing a garden

@Smc we had an old bottle dump down in the back corner of the garden at our previous home.  Wishing now I had kept all the broken crockery for a mosaic project .... will go scouring second hand shops for some in honour of the thought at some stage.
