Re: Self care by growing a garden

@outlander
Perhaps to start with if you got some ready to go plants and see how you go, ensure you get saucers so the porch doesn't get water stains.

Getting some smaller plants like alyssum or violas and putting them round a bigger plant as @Smc suggested is a good idea for a novice gardener - the garden section staff might be able to help, not sure if big w employ horticulturists, but often they have someone interested in gardening in that section.

Re: Self care by growing a garden

Thank you @Former-Member im headed to the shops tomorrow so might at least take a look and maybe get a plant setup to start me off too

Re: Self care by growing a garden

@outlander, a hint with seedling punnets- the biggest plants are not always the best ones. Sometimes they've been in the punnet for too long, and the roots have gotten crowded and tangled. If you've got a choice between punnets with tiny plants/medium plants/tall plants, go for the medium ones. The tiny ones may be too little and not have the root system they need to survive.

Also, if possible, don't buy punnets which have plants already in flower. They look enticing, but once a plant starts flowering, it's chemistry switches into "flower, set seed, die". Most seedling flowers only have a one year life cycle, so the plants are genetically programmed to produce the next generation. If you get plants that aren't flowering yet, they'll be better at putting roots out into their new home. The "instant colour" pots that nurseries sell are really only good if you need to fill out a garden in a hurry, and for a short time. Within a few weeks, they're past their best.

If you can, hold off on planting until you get a couple of cooler days. Being summer that may not be possible, so if not, then keep the pot shaded for the first 2-3 days, and don't let it dry out. The soil should be about as wet as a damp facewasher. Totally soggy and waterlogged isn't good. Light watering twice a day (until the water just starts to come out of the drainage holes) will be good for getting them started, after that once every day or two should be right, unless it's heatwave weather.

Re: Self care by growing a garden

@Former-Member half the joy of gardening is about watching it grow and survive. And doing a bit of nurturing from time to time. Eude. I like the idea of plants producing oxygen.

Re: Self care by growing a garden

Found that joy diminished @eudemonism with Mr D's mental health crisis and taking time for this to return.

Plants producing oxygen ... the lungs of the earth

@outlander - did you get any ideas today for your porch display?

Re: Self care by growing a garden

thanks heaps for the tips! @Smc thats most helpful!

@Former-Memberhello, i didnt get a chance to go to big w or bunning today but im hoping to tomorrow possibly after the drs

Re: Self care by growing a garden

Yea @Former-Member I'm hearing you.

Re: Self care by growing a garden

@Former-Member and @eudemonism, here too. It's one of the classic depression symptoms- losing the enjoyment of things you have liked doing in the past. I think it's worth putting up a fight to get the joy back.

Today, I've been fighting for it with some sunflower seedlings, a few sprouting potatoes, a melon plant and some bean seeds. All a bit later in the season than they should be, but hoping not too late. Have given them all a dose of well broken down chook bedding and water to speed them on their way.

Re: Self care by growing a garden

@Smc

On top of the emotional turmoil associated with Mr D's crisis , I half wondered if a house move might have been necessary so we can be nearer family, this is still in the back of my mind. Mr D was feeling housebound too and needed to get out the house at the weekends. For quite some time he could not drive due to injury and we had a heap of medical appts - time an issue too as I work full time.

Re: Self care by growing a garden

@Smc yea I agree. Do you know what moving stuff around the house is a sign of? You know how you change things around and move things about? I started thinking that technology was polluting my mind today. And moved the computers, tvs, radios and stereo into the back room. I started thinking that all this material stuff is a waste of time. And means nothing. Eude.
